Sweet Freedom
"Sweet Freedom", written by Doug Tjapkes of Spring Lake, is one of three new titles that FaithWalk will be formally introducing in the spring of 2006.
It's a story well-known by Tri-Cities area residents: the story of the 10-year battle to free the late Maurice Carter from prison. Carter, who supporters claim was wrongly convicted, served 29 years in the Michigan prison system before his sentence was commuted by Gov. Jennifer Granholm in July 2004. Carter died just three months later due to complications from liver disease.
Says Wierenga of the book: "It's the true story of an unlikely friendship between a white middle-class broadcast journalist and an African-American serving a life sentence in prison for a crime he did not commit. An amazing account of outrageous injustice contrasts with a poignant and sometimes humorous tale of two men who became brothers in faith."
The book sells for $17, which includes postage, shipping and handling. Advance payment can be made to the author, Doug Tjapkes, and sent to his home: 18569 Pawnee Drive, Spring Lake, MI 49456. Books are expected to be shipped by the end of January 2006. Gift certificates are available.
Tjapkes is former owner of radio station WGHN in Grand Haven. While serving as manager/news director, he won the prestigious Advancement of Justice Award presented by the State Bar of Michigan.
